Over the past half century or so, Sam Devlin has designed and built a lot of boats. At last count, he built 434 of them himself, and many more have been built to his designs by others.

Devlin turned 70 this year and wanted to try something different, so he took Puffin, his 1966 William Garden designed trawler, to Alaska. Soundings Deputy Editor Pim Van Hemmen joined him for the Ketchikan to Juneau leg, which included whales, dolphins, glaciers and a bit of bourbon.

“I’m not sure if I know how to slow down,” the workaholic boatbuilder told Van Hemmen, “but Puffin can only do 6 knots, so we’re going to find out.”
