Yesterday, Mercury Marine launched its first V10 outboards, of 350 and 400 horsepower each.

The Verado engines have a 5.7-liter displacement and a 150-amp alternator. The new outboards are offered with an optional dual-mode 48V/12V alternator.

The outboards work for a range of boat types and activities, from single-engine fishing boats and pontoons to large saltwater center consoles. Coming in at just under 700 pounds, they allow owners a variety multi-engine choices.

Mercury Marine says the outboards have many new and improved features. Running on 87-octane fuel, the engines use a closed-loop fuel system. That makes them more efficient than their predecessors and optimizes low-end power through adaptive speed control (ASP), which keeps the engine rpm consistent in swells or when conditions change.

“We challenged our engineers to improve acceleration and overall performance with the new V10 Verado outboards, while also making them quieter and lighter than competitors’ outboards in this horsepower range,” says Tim Reid, Mercury Marine’s vice president of product development and engineering.
