John Deurr, an engineer at Wyoming-based pontoon boat builder Premier Marine, says his company is ready to share a trade secret that could help prevent the spread of invasive species.

“We did use it for a marketing advantage for a long time. Now we’re telling the world,” he told ABC 5 News in Minnesota.

Premier Marine said it was the first to use the subtle design tweak of sealing the normally open-ended strakes on the bottom of its aluminum pontoons.

“We’ve been doing this for a number of years,” Deurr told ABC 5. “It’s time that the rest of the industry catches on and does that.”
