In Centerport, New York, SailAhead helps veterans who suffer from PTSD and suicidal ideation by taking them out on the water and teaching them how to sail. The seventh annual “Take a Veteran Sailing” afternoon will take place August 13th at the Centerport Yacht Club to raise awareness of PTSD and to honor those veterans who have died by suicide.
Veterans will be assigned to volunteer boats and learn basic sailing skills from volunteer cadets from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. The day of sailing will be followed by a barbecue and live music by the Society Road band.

“We believe involving veterans with our activities on the water will lead to their mental well-being and prevent suicides,” Sean Duclay, one of the founders of SailAhead, said in a news release. “Primarily, taking them sailing is how we do it!”
Sean and Kilian Duclay founded SailAhead in 2015, when they were 16 and 14 years old. This year’s event will honor Specialist Ryan James Day and all of his mates.
