Every year since 2007, they’ve held the Pumpkinfest & Regatta in Damariscotta, Maine, which features people racing giant pumpkins. Thousands of spectators show up to see the race.

Competitors hollow out the 1,000-pound pumpkins, decorate them, dress themselves up and even mount outboards on the pumpkins. It’s not about winning. It’s about having fun and not sinking.

NBC’s Lester Holt narrates this highly entertaining video from last year’s races.
