A research tech from the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy this week got the surprise of his life this week when a full-grown white shark breached beneath his harpoon platform as he was trying to tag it.
The crew was working the beaches near Wellfleet, Massachusetts, when a support boat spotted an adult white shark cruising along the surface. As the skipper maneuvered the boat into position, so the technician could tag it from the harpoon platform, a massive white shark breached just under his feet. This video captures the action.
White sharks, like many marine animals, are known to leap from the water from time to time, though researchers are unsure whether the behavior has a specific purpose.
