Intrepid’s 400 CC I/O Diesel
Intrepid Powerboats is all about pleasing its customers, so when someone wanted a diesel sterndrive center console with joystick control, the Florida builder responded.

The owner of this boat liked it so much he ordered another one, says Intrepid president Ken Clinton, referring to the new 400 Center Console I/O Diesel.

The 40-footer gets nearly 2 mpg at 34 mph and 1.3 mpg at its top end of 53 mph. The transom seat opens for excellent access to the twin Volvo Penta D6 400-hp diesels.

For safety and balance, Intrepid builds in toekick space around the aerodynamic console, leaning post and along the gunwales. Facing bench seats are positioned outboard on the foredeck and also can function as fishboxes or stowage lockers. With the push of a button, these power-actuated compartments slide inboard and meet to create a padded lounge ó and to free up fishing real estate at the gunwales. The two-person seat on the forward side of the console slides open to reveal the head and sink.

Also offered with outboards, the 400 rides a transverse stepped hull with ample freeboard. Intrepid builds boats that excel in relatively skinny water, so the company chose sterndrives over pod drives. “But this allows us to take advantage of the aspect of Volvo IPS that we do find very useful: the joystick,” says Clinton.

With the Volvo Penta I/Os and joystick system, the Intrepid 400 is about $475,000 to $500,000 depending on options. Intrepid Powerboats, (954) 922-7544. www.intrepidboats.com
