The extended flybridge has become a popular feature on motoryachts and large express cruisers as boaters spend more time together in this open area. Trawler builder Kadey-Krogen Yachts has been upsizing its flybridges to create what company vice president Larry Polster calls “social zones” — first with the 44 AE and 48 AE and now the 58 Extended Bridge. “We’re getting a wider variety of boaters used to spending a lot of time outside and not in a pilothouse,” says Polster.

The Krogen 58 EB’s bridge area extends from the pilothouse windshield to the transom — enough real estate for a “summer kitchen” with a refrigerator and stove and plenty of seating. “We’re going for more of a patio layout and feeling,” Polster says.

There’s room for a day head in the pilothouse, which many owners want, and the helm station is on centerline, with an option for a starboard companion seat. The 58 EB has two full heads and two or three staterooms below. In the deckhouse, you’ll find the saloon and a full galley.

Standard power is a single 325-hp 6-cylinder John Deere diesel; twin 4-cylinder 160-hp diesels are an option. Polster points out that today’s John Deere diesels produce more horsepower in smaller packages, which improves engine room access. In fact, the boat’s previous twin-engine option was 6-cylinder 154-hp diesels.

The 58 EB rides the same displacement hull as the standard Krogen 58. It reaches 10.4 knots and finds its sweet spot at 8 knots, where the fuel burn is around 5 gallons per hour for a range of 2,600 nautical miles. At 7.6 knots, the fuel burn drops to 4 gph, upping the range to 3,000 nm. These numbers are about the same for the single- or twin-engine setup, says Polster.

Base price is about $2.1 million, and it’s about $2.4 million with a bow thruster, stabilizers, air conditioning, a generator and a dinghy crane.

The Krogen 58 EB is expected to make its first boat show appearance at the Yacht & Brokerage Show in Miami Beach next February.
