The MJM 36z, built by Boston BoatWorks, has been modified for 2013. The express cruiser now has a separate shower in the cabin and a centerline walkthrough transom door.

“We wanted the boat to have really good access to the water,” says Doug Zurn, who designed the 36z and the other MJM models. (That’s what the “z” stands for.) “We decided to redesign the stern and make it available for walkthrough and make it a nice place to hang out and relax when you’re swimming.”
The boat is offered in two versions: the Express and the Down East. The Express’s sloping side windshield extends farther aft, and the Down East’s smaller side windshield has a vertical aft edge for more of a lobster boat look. Company owner Bob Johnstone prides himself on commissioning light, strong boats built with the latest materials and methods, and designed and powered for maximum fuel efficiency. He also wants his boats to be easy to use and maintain. “People are looking for smaller boats they can handle, that they can use more often because they are more versatile, not some monster tied up to a dock,” Johnstone says.
The 36z gets about 2 nautical miles to the gallon at 25 knots with twin 220-hp Volvo Penta D3 diesels and DPS drives. Johnstone points out that engine noise levels are relatively low and that helm decibel levels are about 75. The standard propulsion package also includes the Volvo Penta sterndrive joystick and a bow thruster.
The MJM’s deck layout promotes a comfortable, social atmosphere with its single-level cockpit and pilothouse/bridge deck that seats 12. Side and aft curtains open the pilothouse to the outdoors and allow the space to be air conditioned. The cabin’s V-berth, galley and head with separate shower give a couple all of the accommodations for multiday cruises, Johnstone says.
