Has the midsize inboard convertible met its match? The folks at SeaHunter Boats believe so. The Pompano Beach, Fla., builder has introduced the Tournament 45, a battlewagon of a center console that can run more than 600 miles on a tank of gas.

“You don’t notice the sheer size of this boat until you see it next to other boats,” SeaHunter sales manager Eddie Leon says. “It carries its beam all the way from the back cockpit forward to the bow flare. It is very tall and deep. The footprint of the boat is enormous. And the fact that it gets competitive performance numbers is an attribute of the design and engineering of the boat.”
Naval architect Mark Biddison, of Marine Concepts in Cape Coral, Fla., designed the Tournament 45. (Leon says Biddison also has penned two other SeaHunter models: the Tournament 37 and Tournament 32.) Its deep-vee hull — 60 degrees of deadrise at entry tapering to 24.5 at the transom — with quadruple 350-hp Yamahas delivers a smooth ride and handles big water, Leon says.
The 45 was engineered for a quad-outboard setup, but the boat likely would run well with triples, Leon says. “I had one of the four engines tilted out of the water, and it still reached 50 mph, so it appears I will be able to produce this boat in a triple-engine configuration,” he says. Leon says performance numbers are due in soon, but the company expects this model’s mileage to be near 1 mpg.
The boat is big, and so is the helm, which can hold three 19-inch electronics displays. The console/cabin houses a queen-size berth, a head, a sink and a microwave oven. “It has a well-appointed cabin for a center console while still maintaining the open space on deck that our customers in our niche really come to us for,” Leon says. “It is still a sportfishing/diving center console, but now you can do overnighters in relative comfort.”
