Boat design from a master

Naval architect Dave Martin has designed boats for more than 55 years and counts decades of boating off southern New Jersey.

In his DVD “Book of Dave Martin Designs — Celebrating 55 Years in Private Practice” (2010, $34.95 on www.Amazon.com, 253 pages), he offers stories, photos, line drawings, and the experience and wisdom gained from a lifetime of boating and design.

A primary goal, he says, is to stress to the next generation of naval architects the benefits of designing boats that burn less fuel for their weight than most production models on the market today. Martin’s work includes catboats, runabouts, motoryachts and convertibles. A companion DVD, “Efficient Boat Designs,” ($24.95 on Amazon) details Martin’s philosophy in designing fast, efficient powerboats, with an introduction to the science of boat design.
