Waterman’s way

A new novel by a Maine waterman turned author tells the story of lobsterman Nicolas Graves, who raised his sons aboard his commercial boat, passing on the rules and rites of the business they love.

Jon Keller’s Of Sea and Cloud (Tyrus Books, $19 hardcover) gets rolling when Graves is lost at sea and the price of lobster crashes worldwide, leaving sons Bill and Jonah to decide how much they are willing to risk for their family legacy. Standing against them, intent on driving the Graves family out of the lobster business, is Osmond Randolph, a former Calvinist minister turned captain — and their father’s business partner for more than 20 years.
