The private estate of presidential yacht builder John Trumpy Sr., designed by the builder himself, is up for sale in Annapolis, Md., and listed at $4.495 million.
The property is on more than an acre with 85 feet along the Severn River and has a 325-foot pier and three deep-water slips.
Trumpy may best be known for having built the 104-foot Sequoia II in 1925. It was the yacht for eight U.S. presidents, beginning with Franklin Roosevelt and including John F. Kennedy.
The restored U.S.S. Sequoia, now a National Historic Landmark, is rented as a charter.
“The Sequoia may be both the most famous vessel in America and the most important piece of Americana not owned by the government,” the Sequoia Presidential Yacht Group said on its website.
“The Sequoia represents sort of a floating White House and offered the potential for presidents to influence everyone from foreign leaders to members of Congress,” Stuart Eizenstat, domestic policy adviser during the Carter administration, is quoted as saying on the site.
Trumpy received his formal training as an architect at the U.S. Naval Academy. He later became president of the Mathis Yacht Building Co., eventually changing its name to Trumpy & Sons Inc. In 1947 the Trumpy family purchased the Annapolis Yacht Yard. A passion project, his private estate embodied his master craftsmanship. The home was completed in 1948.
The main house features 4,700 square feet of living area, including five bedrooms and four bathrooms and one half-bath.
The coastal-style architectural elements of the home include the use of white wood, a cedar shake roof, copper gutters and a circular drive. Unique to the home is an antique limestone Trumeanu fireplace and mantel from Charente, France, in the gourmet kitchen and a 2,500-bottle, temperature-controlled wine cellar on the lower level.
