British solo skipper Ian Herbert-Jones activated his EPIRB after a South Atlantic storm with 80-plus-knot wind gusts and 25-foot seas dismasted his boat and caused him multiple injuries. His distress signal went out on April 10, and a mission to rescue him is underway.
Herbert-Jones has been trying to cut away the rigging from Puffin, a Tradewind 35 cutter, to prevent it from holing his boat while he waits for help, but the heavy weather and injuries to his shoulder and back have made it difficult to complete that job.

The Taiwanese fishing vessel Zi Da Wang has diverted its course toward Puffin, just 90 miles away, and will attempt a rescue of the sailor.
