Supporters of Miami Marine Stadium say the Miami International Boat Show, set for later this week at the stadium park and basin, will renew interest in restoring the shuttered facility.
A letter to the editor in the Miami Herald is lauding the Miami International Boat Show as a potential catalyst that will bring attention to and could eventually lead to the restoration of Miami Marine Stadium, which was shut after Hurricane Andrew hit in 1992.
“Thousands will have the opportunity to view the iconic stadium during the boat show, scheduled for Feb. 11-15, for the first time since it was shuttered,” wrote Don Worth, co-founder of Restore Marine Stadium.
Attendees who remember the stadium from past years will think back to concerts they saw there, from Ray Charles to Jimmy Buffett, Worth wrote. (Locals often reminisce about having watched concerts from the basin on boats.)
“What is particularly exciting is that attendees will have the opportunity to see a rarely seen view of the stadium — the spectacular view from the water side,” he wrote. “While boating enthusiasts will enjoy the new home of the 75-year-old boat show, they should also know that they are kick-starting revitalization of the iconic Marine Stadium and helping to ensure its preservation for future enthusiasts.
“The National Trust for Historic Preservation and Dade Heritage Trust will staff an information booth at the boat show, where attendees can learn more about the Marine Stadium and sign a petition promoting its restoration.”
