A bill was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives that would ban importing all 11 lionfish species, including the nine that have not been found in U.S. waters.
The bill, introduced last week, would not interfere with the selling of lionfish fillets, which helps eliminate the invasive species in Florida waters, according to the News-Press.
Florida representatives David Jolly, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Mario Diaz-Balart, Carlos Curbelo, Ander Crenshaw and Pedro Pierluisi are co-sponsors.
Lionfish can consume up to 40 juvenile fish a day, lay up to 2 million eggs a year and have no natural predators in the Western Hemisphere.
