More than nine months after a Staten Island, N.Y., community was devastated by Hurricane Sandy, a property owner is left with a constant reminder of the storm — a wrecked sailboat leaning against his backyard bulkhead.
The sunken boat, with only its 25-foot mast protruding from the surface, has been an issue for a local couple since they moved back into their home in March.
“I’m looking at it constantly,” Vincent Fatto told the Staten Island Advance. “Here we get things all fixed up and it’ll be there to remind me until the end of time.”
The couple has contacted the Coast Guard, the National Park Service, the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, the state Department of Environmental Conservation, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the city Department of Sanitation, the New York police and local politicians, but no organization has accepted responsibility or offered any solutions.
