David Lawson, a professional sailor from Baltimore, Maryland, went missing in mid-July, just a week after departing from Acapulco, Mexico, for a trip to Panama aboard his 60-foot trimaran.

According to The Washington Post, Lawson contacted his wife on July 12 to tell her he was unable to charge his electronics. His wife contacted the U.S. Coast Guard after she didn’t hear from him again. Mexican navy vessels are currently looking for Lawson in the Pacific after a plane spotted a vessel that matched Lawson’s.

Lawson is the founder Dark Seas Project, a nonprofit organization that encourages minorities to join the sailing community. Lawson started sailing at 9 years old. He has crossed the Atlantic numerous times and was planning to sail around the world aboard the French-built trimaran to try and break the around-the-world speed record.

On July 25th a Mexican navy plane spotted a boat that matched the missing vessel, but they could not confirm if it was Lawson’s trimaran, or if he was aboard. Lawson’s wife is hopeful. “We are continuing to pray that Donald will be found,” she wrote “and will soon return safely to his family, friends and sailing supporters.”
