Do you recognize this classic beauty? It was built at Coecles Harbor Marina & Boatyard in Shelter Island, New York. The yard is known for producing beautiful runabout-style boats sized from 30 to 38 feet, one model at a time.

The Shelter Island Nomad measures 30-feet, 2-inches LOA with a beam of 9 feet, 11 inches. Pictured is Margie. Designed by Doug Zurn, the Nomad design features a shoal draft propulsion system and a unique opening transom. The opening transom hinges down to become a swim platform, or to create easier access when boarding.

The helm offers excellent visibility. The interior layout also has an enclosed head with a shower, a V-berth, a complete galley and locker space below. Power comes from twin inboard Yanmar 6LPA diesels rated at 315 hp each, which can produce a cruising speed of 29 knots and a max speed of 34 knots.

Coecles Harbor Marina & Boatyard has been family owned and operated since 1973. In addition to boat construction services, the location features a full-service marina on Shelter Island, one of the most unspoiled destinations on Long Island’s East End.

The business has been on the Long Island Waterfront for more than 50 years, but it took off when a fellow Long Islander showed up to talk about having a boat built. In the book “Boat Building and Boat Yards of Long Island,” Nancy Solomon writes that the principals there weren’t sure what to think when Joel walked in. “He was all scruffy,” said co-owner Peter Needham. “I didn’t even know who he was.” Peter and his brothers soon got to know Joel very well, building boats for him, with the Piano Man involved in every detail of the projects. “Billy really helped us,” Peter said. “We got into every marine publication in the world, on CNN, everywhere.”
