Dutch design firm Vripack Yacht Design transformed a former fishing trawler into a hybrid yacht for a private owner. The 149-foot, 6-inch Scintilla Maris began her life in 1988 as a single-screw fishing trawler and has now been fully converted to a personal adventure yacht with hybrid-electric propulsion.

The owner of Scintilla Maris said in a press release, “I wanted to make use of the magnificent Dutch fishing trawler hulls that have been built over the centuries and to create something that offers optimum comfort and quality of life rather than luxury.”

Vripack’s work on the conversion was done at the Damen Maaskant shipyard in Stellendam, the Netherlands. The Scintilla Maris’ volume was reduced from 570 tons to 500 tons to comply with size regulations. She also received a new blue paint job and an entirely refurbished interior for long-range cruising.

Much of the ship’s original features have been retained, like the windows on the bridge, which happens to be the owner’s favorite place on the vessel. Some of her original controls and radios are now kept in a ‘museum’ at the bridge. Before she was purchased by her new owner, Scintilla Maris was named Vertrouen HD23.

The interior, which was built from high pressure laminate, has the appearance of a modern loft apartment, with plenty of natural light, curved walls, and brightly colored upholstery. Natural light was one of the owner’s principal requests. What was once the fish hold, is now the owner’s suite amidships, and the original hatch is now a large skylight.

The adventure yacht can sleep 10 guests in five double staterooms, each boasting a private head. Nine crew can be accommodated with a private crew galley and mess.

To comply with strict emissions and noise regulations, Scintilla Maris’ original 4,400-hp Deutz MWM diesel engine was replaced with a hybrid-electric propulsion system. Her maiden voyage this year will be a cruise from Norway to Iceland and then to Greenland.
