On July 30, Deputy Travis Fernandes and Deputy Jill Constant of the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office received a call about a runaway boat in Tampa Bay. The deputies rushed their boat to St. Pete Pier and looked for the vessel.

Out in the open water, Fernandes and Constant spotted a boat speeding around in circles. Driving at 60 mph, Constant inched closer and closer to the runaway vessel until the two boats touched. That’s when Fernandes jumped from the sheriff’s boat to the runaway vessel and got her under control.

“We don’t want people to get hurt or anything like that,” Fernandes was quoted in an article for The Washington Post. “But when a call comes out like this, we look forward to being able to practice what we train.”
