A search-and-rescue operation off the California coast turned into a drug smuggling investigation.

It all started around 3 a.m., when the owner of the local Vessel Assist tow firm in the Ventura Harbor says he got a call from a man who claimed his son was fishing and needed a tow. The tow captain was busy salvaging another boat, so he called the Coast Guard, which dispatched a boarding crew.

The crew found two men stranded in a 27-foot cabin cruiser. Suspicious was aroused when neither of the men could not name the type of bait they were using.
