The Coast Guard Foundation said more than $1 million was raised last Thursday at the 34th annual Salute to the U.S. Coast Guard in New York.
The foundation said $250,000 will be allocated to its Fallen Heroes Fund, which provides support for the families of Coast Guard members lost in the line of duty.
The foundation helps pay for the immediate and ongoing needs of the families, including the cost of college for the children.
“As an organization, we are committed to supporting Coast Guard members and their families when they need it the most,” Coast Guard Foundation president Anne Brengle said in a statement.
“Our support helps families grieve fully without having to worry about money during these difficult, heart-wrenching situations. Through the generosity of those in attendance last night we are able to continue to meet that need.”
