Two people were rescued early Saturday morning after falling out of their boat Friday night off Key Largo, Fla.

Rescued was Sean McGovern, a 50-year-old male from Key Largo, and Mellisa Morris, a 52-year-old female visiting from Texas.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Miami received a report from the Broward County Sheriff’s Office that an off-duty detective and firefighter located and recovered two people in the water off Hallandale Beach, Florida, early Saturday morning.

The couple reported they fell into the water and were separated from their 30-foot Island Hopper boat at approximately 6 p.m., off of Key Largo.

The boat throttle was still engaged and the couple said they watched it disappear from view. They were not wearing personal flotation devices.

“They are very lucky — they didn’t have any signal device,” Coast Guard spokesman Mark Barney told CNN. “They were trying to signal people down with their T-shirt. To be located and recovered by off-duty cops and a firefighter — that’s a stroke of luck right there.”
