A crewmember from the 85-foot schooner Liana’s Ransom took it upon himself to jump to a 47-foot Motor Lifeboat in a spring storm 58 miles off Gloucester, Massachusetts. The captain issued a mayday when the tall ship, en route from Nova Scotia to the Caribbean, had engine problems and the sails wrapped around the mast in 10-foot seas and 30-knot winds.
