The Nordhavn 55 Tesoro departed Mexico on March 12 and began her cruise to the Marquesas Islands through a stretch of almost entirely open ocean. About 2,900-nautical miles and 17 days later, the trawler made it to Hiva Oa in the southern Marquesas group. The boat’s passage marks 161 documented ocean crossings by a Nordhavn.
The route is commonly cruised by sailboats, as range is less of a concern on that type of boat. Crossing on a powerboat can be more intimidating due to fuel needs. Tesoro’s owners, Joe Salomone and Patti Shaw, were acutely aware of their fuel consumption during the trip.
The owners brought 510 gallons of fuel in bladders, along with the 2,310 gallons of fuel held in Tesoro’s tanks. A fuel log by Salomone and Shaw documents their average fuel burn at 4.28 gph at 6.9 knots. Thanks to their detailed planning and calculations, they made it to the Marquesas with a fuel reserve of 21.8 percent (not including the fuel bladders).
Nordhavn keeps a mileage calculator of each registered boat it builds and the nautical miles traveled. With Tesoro’s journey completed, she brings the builder’s overall distance to almost 8,000,000 nautical miles.
