A 69-year-old man barely escaped with his life after his boat, the No. 5 Takamaru, capsized on Saturday off the southern Japanese island of Yakushima. The Japanese Coast Guard found him clinging to the bottom of the capsized vessel in rough seas after searching for him for nearly a day.

The man was located 18 miles southeast of where he originally disappeared, wrapped in a plastic sheet and clinging to his boat’s propeller. Once the rescuers brought him back to port, he was transported to the hospital. He reportedly suffered an injury to his left ankle.
