Lewis Pugh, 53, a British endurance swimmer, is determined to show the world that major waterways, even those considered to be highly toxic, can be saved. “I’ve been looking for a river for many, many years which could tell the story about all rivers,” said Pugh in The New York Times. “And always, every single time, it comes back to the Hudson.”

The Hudson river stretches from the Adirondacks to New York City and flows through creeks, ghost towns, old factories, and past the state capital. While some parts of the river are exceedingly clean, some stretches are still infested with chemicals, bacteria and other toxins.

Pugh is a self-proclaimed ‘Patron of the Ocean’ and hopes his 315-mile swim in the Hudson will show people from around the world that misused waterways can be cared for and salvaged.
