Four of the five remaining IMOCA teams are still racing towards Itajaí, Brazil in the third leg of the 2023 Ocean Race. Team Malizia passed Cape Horn on March 27, awarding them the Roaring Forties trophy and giving them the encouragement they need to keep racing. Following Malizia are Team Holcim-PRB, 11th Hour Racing Team and Biotherm.

“Cape Horn holds many memories for me, and crossing this line in first almost means more than winning the leg, not in terms of points but in terms of what it means,” said Boris Herrmann, skipper of Team Malizia.
The Southern Ocean is rough, and the term Roaring Forties refers to the strong westerly winds found between the latitudes of 40°S and 50°S. The trophy is awarded for the fastest passage between the Cape of Good Hope in Africa and Cape Horn in South America. Team Malizia managed this feat in 27 days, 17 hours and 31 minutes. On Sunday, Team Malizia’s Rosalin Kuiper suffered a concussion and cut when she was thrown from her bunk due to the rough conditions. With medical advice and quick action, she is now recovering onboard.
Team Biotherm and 11th Hour Racing Team are about 250 miles behind the two leading boats. Team Holcim-PRB continues to race closely behind Team Malizia.

“They’re [Holcim-PRB] doing an amazing job of pushing us as well,” said Will Harris from Team Malizia. “We’ll need our best game. It’s a long way to go—2000 miles—and we’re looking forward to it.”
