Three men were injured when a whale breached off the Port Elizabeth, South Africa, coastline and landed on their inflatable boat, the National Sea Rescue Institute said.
Spokesman Craig Lambinon said Albertus Myburgh, Wouter van Heerden and Rodney van der Mecht were injured.
According to local reports, the trio had been motoring close to Noordhoek, a suburb of Cape Town, on Monday evening.
They swam back to the boat after it capsized under the weight of the whale.
Lambinon said one of the men’s cellphones was still working and they called the boat’s owner for help.
The price they paid: broken ribs, an injured arm and leg.

Whales also made headlines in New Zealand which “the world’s rarest whale” was found on a beach.
“This is the first time a spade-toothed beaked whale has been seen as a complete specimen, and we were lucky enough to find two of them,” University of Auckland lead scientist Rochelle Constantine said in a statement.
