Commercial shipping can be a tough way to earn a living. Plowing through massive seas while balancing tons of cargo on the deck of a small floating city isn’t an easy gig.

Given that most everything we buy spent at least some time at sea, we tend to take what merchant mariners do for granted.

Based on survey results, the World Shipping Council estimated that, on average, about 350 containers were lost at sea each year from 2008 through 2010, not counting catastrophic events.

As this video shows, anything can happen out there, especially if cargo is improperly secured.
