This time-lapse video shows the Coast Guard icebreaker Mackinaw freeing the Great Lakes freighter James R. Barker from the ice in the St. Mary’s River.

The video was taken by Benjamin Feinman, deck officer and relief captain aboard the 1,000-foot freighter.

MLive.com reports that on Jan. 14, the James R. Barker became stuck in the ice on the St. Mary’s River, which flows from Lake Superior to Lake Huron, for about an hour. After the Mackinaw broke up the ice, the Barker continued its course to Indiana Harbor, on the southwest shore of Lake Michigan in East Chicago, Indiana.

Ice owns the Great Lakes during winter. In 2015, more than 80 percent of the surface water was frozen; Lake Erie was 94 percent covered in March. In 2013-14, there was ice on Lake Superior into June. Click here for more.
