We found this 1936 film of the schooner Wanderbird, posted to YouTube by Periscope Pictures. It follows the schooner, skippered by Capt. Warwick M. Tompkins, on a journey from Gloucester Harbor in Massachusetts south to Cape Horn and on to the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco Bay.
Be warned — this clip may trigger a wistful longing for the days when our lives were less consumed by technology and the world was more mysterious and unknown. You may encounter a strong urge to run off to sea.
Voyagers such as Joshua Slocum, Krystyna Chojnowska-Liskiewicz and Bernard Moitessier continue to inspire us though their stories to embark on our own journeys. Done one yourself or been inspired by someone you know? Tell us about it in the comments section below.
