Yamaha Motor Co. announced Friday that the company will acquire the German electric marine propulsion manufacturer Torqeedo. The acquisition should help Yamaha reach its goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and to maintain the brand’s position in the propulsion market.

Founded in 2005 in Wessling, Germany, Torqeedo produces a range of electric outboards, inboards, batteries and other accessories. The brand also owns multiple patents for electric propulsion systems, as well as mass-production and developmental resources.

“Through the relationship with Torqeedo, Yamaha will have the ability to fast-track the establishment of a small electric propulsion lineup, complementing the company’s efforts with hydrogen and sustainable fuels as additional means of reducing the carbon footprint on the water,” said Ben Speciale, President, Yamaha U.S. Marine Business Unit.

By acquiring Torqeedo, Yamaha gets a step closer in what a study from the International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA) calls a “portfolio of technologies.” The production and resource power gained through Torqeedo sets Yamaha on track to greatly reduce its carbon emissions.
