We all know that we need to carry flares for potential emergencies onboard, but traditional flares are a sticky wicket when it comes to safe, environmentally responsible disposal after they’ve expired.
Made of a combination of chemicals—which can include strontium nitrate, potassium perchlorate, potassium nitrate, magnesium, or aluminum—they are a pollution threat, and there are millions of them in circulation. The North American Hazardous Materials Management Association in 2022 cited a Rhode Island Department of Health study that found “a single improperly disposed of flare can contaminate up to 240,000 gallons in a drinking water source with perchlorates. Strontium nitrate and strontium peroxide are listed on the EPA’s Toxic Substance Control Act Inventory List, potassium nitrate and potassium perchlorate are known irritants, and other ingredients, such as strontium nitrate, may also have an adverse impact on water quality.”
Ocean Signal, a UK-based marine safety equipment company, has developed electronic flares to help solve this problem, and its latest offering is the rescueME EDF2 Distress Light, its most advanced eVDSD (Electronic Visual Distress Signaling Device). Combining electronic and optical technologies, the buoyant handheld device surpasses RTCM (Radio Technical Commission for Maritime Standards) regulations, offering sailors a safe, environmentally friendly, and reusable alternative to traditional pyrotechnic flares.
“With an impressive light intensity of over 50cd (candela), the electronic distress flare outshines basic illumination. Flashing the international morse code for “S-O-S” in red-orange and cyan LEDs while its infrared (IR) component simultaneously mirrors the signal pattern, the device is optimized for visibility in low-light conditions and compatible with night vision optics. Certified as a Night Visual Distress Signaling Device (eNDSD), it is an invaluable tool for night rescue teams,” the company said in a media release. This new electronic flare can operate 50 percent longer than RTCM standards, well exceeding traditional flares’ burn time.
“We are extremely proud to be bringing this reliable, safe and reusable electronic flare to the market,” says Mikele D’Arcangelo, vice president of global marketing and product management. “Our engineers have ensured the EDF2 not only meets the highest safety standards but also aligns with the growing demand for eco-friendly maritime equipment. Providing even better visibility than the traditional flares and compatibility with modern rescue technology, the EDF2 is a vital addition for all boat safety kits.”
Ocean Signal says the new EDF2 will be available for shipping by the end of this year.
