While it’s been in the works for many years, Stephens Waring Design of Belfast, Maine, has just announced a new 26-foot, electric commuter boat to be launched in the fall of 2024.

With inspiration from iconic wooden boats like Italian-made Rivas, the electric commuter is intended to be sleek and eye-catching. The design was developed for a long-term client who wanted a boat to reach her vacation home on a Maine island.
Now named Isobel, the vessel measures 26 feet, 6 inches long with a beam of 7 feet, 11 inches. Her low sheer line makes boarding from the side easy, although she also features a stern platform for access and swimming.
Made from cedar strips coated in fiberglass, Isobel is very lightweight, which Is essential for electric power.
Power comes from a 50-hp (40kW) motor from RAD Propulsion in the United Kingdom. Energy is stored in a 55kWh battery pack that produces 350 volts, with a peak output of 30kW. The battery can go from a 20 percent charge to 80 percent in under an hour. The energy storage system comes from Fellten, a United Kingdom company known for repowering classic cars.

Isobel cruises at 10 to 13 knots with a range of 50 nautical miles. At maximum power her range is cut in half.
