It’s one thing to build a superyacht in a factory, or a high-tech America’s Cup contender shrouded in secrecy, or a P Class kitset in your backyard.

It’s quite another thing to build a classic 1930s schooner, two-masted, gaff-rigged wooden schooner in your shed, using almost no plans.

That’s what retired engineer Bob Millen is doing in Australia, building his dream boat, Black Pearl.

“I got a diagram of the boat out of a book and scaled that up for the hull,” Bob says. “Apart from that we’re pretty much making it up as we go.”
