The crew of a Glass Bottom Shipwreck Tours boat in Munsing, Michigan, were awarded last week after rescuing two kayakers from rough water under the guidance of Captain Kate Faust.

The rescue occurred on September 20, when the kayakers encountered 32-mph winds and heavy seas. The crew on the tour boat altered their course to help the distressed pair and used a homemade metal “man overboard” system to lift them into the boat.

On June 16, the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Sault Ste. Marie honored the captain and crew with the Captain David P. Dobbins Award, which is presented for “outstanding actions accomplished while prosecuting search and rescue missions on the Great Lakes.” Says the Coast Guard sector, “We are always thankful for the outstanding job that our commercial and recreational mariners do helping those in need on the water. Congratulations to Captain Faust, Ms. Witty and Mr. Whitehead on a job well done!”
