George David’s 90-foot maxi Rambler smashed the 635-mile Newport Bermuda race record, clipping a massive 14 hours off the previous best time set 10 years ago by Roy Disney’s Pyewacket.
The new record now stands at 39 hours, 39 minutes, 18 seconds (subject to ratification) — an average speed of 16 knots.
“These were perfect conditions. The most exciting moment was when we hit 26 knots,” David said.
In other race news, a sailor was evacuated from a racing boat because of his medical condition.
At approximately 3 a.m. (EDT) Monday, Nathan C. Owen (Norwell, Mass.), who was reported to be suffering from complications from dehydration, was transferred from his 46-foot sloop Seabiscuit to a cruise ship, Enchantment of the Sea. The rescue occurred 200 miles northwest of Bermuda in rough seas.
