Several incidents on the water ruined the day for boaters, but could have turned out worse.
Off New York’s Long Island,three men who jumped off a burning boat Saturday night were rescued after floating in the water for about 20 minutes.
The Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau received a 911 call from a cell phone at 6:55 p.m. Saturday from three men who had to jump into the Great South Bay when they couldn’t put out a fire on their powerboat, according to a report by The Daily News.
In Massachusetts, aman had to be rescued after his boat caught fire off of Cape Cod on Sunday morning, officials said.
“I believe it was this guy’s first trip out,” Harwich deputy harbormaster Bill Neiser told the Boston Herald. “I called Harwich fire and went out to get the guy off the boat. The most I talked to him was to get him to drop his anchor. We didn’t really have much of a conversation other than that I asked him if he was OK.”
