A retired Ohio teacher whose class launched a tiny carved wooden boat 17 years ago that was found last week washed ashore on Point Pelee in the Canadian province of Ontario was recently contacted.

And there is a lot more to the story behind the boat that was all news to Vinka Gervais, a Grade 3 teacher at Princess Elizabeth School in Windsor, whose husband Glenn found the vessel.

It turns out the boat was inspired by a 1941 children’s book.

The boat had a message written on it asking that it be put back in the water. A third grade class will do just that.
