Major new changes to the Volvo Ocean Race (formerly the Whitbread Round the World Race) are set to be announced next month with smaller boats, smaller teams and a shorter route.
Fewer stopovers are also likely to be introduced to encourage more entries, but the high costs of a Volvo Ocean Race campaign, between 20 and 30 million euros have been heavily criticized by teams and sponsors, resulting in lower levels of interest and participation. Only six boats, the smallest fleet of race boats in the event’s history, took to the start line last November.
