The U.S. Coast Guard rescued a boater off the Columbia River Bar in Washington, unaware that the boater had stolen the boat.

During a training mission at the mouth of the Columbia River, the U.S. Coast Guard received a Mayday signal from Sandpiper, a fiberglass motor yacht. The Coast Guard sent out motor lifeboats, and aircrews flew in to stand by. Due to the rough conditions and large waves, the helicopter team lowered in a rescue swimmer and told the boater to abandon ship.

Luckily for the boater, a wave swept the boat and deposited him in the water right before it rolled 360 degrees. The rescue swimmer was able to retrieve the boater. Back on land, a medical evaluation showed the boater had mild hypothermia, but he was treated and released from Columbia Memorial Hospital.

That’s when the police received a call from the local port security chief, Matt Hansen. After confirming with the boat’s owner, Hansen reported to the authorities that the boat had been stolen. Other citizens contacted the police to identify the boater, a 35-year-old Canadian named Jericho Labonte. Labonte also had outstanding criminal charges back in British Columbia. To make the story even more bizarre, Labonte had been caught on a security camera leaving a dead fish on the porch of the house that had been used in the movie “The Goonies” in Astoria, Oregon. It was the only fish Labonte had caught during a charter fishing expedition.

Authorities located Labonte and he was arrested on charges of theft, endangering another person, unauthorized use of a vehicle and criminal mischief.
