CH Marine, the custom builder based in Shelter Island, New York, has announced changes to its classic Shelter Island Runabout, a design that was first launched in 1996. The new 38FS, with an LOA of 38 feet, is a modification of the original design, with changes that include the addition of forward seating in the bow.
The builder says the 38FS will still offer the performance of the original Runabout, but will accommodate those that are looking for some extra seating all while maintaining the model’s classic lines.
The moderate V-hull with a 15-degree deadrise and 10-foot beam is compatible with inboards or outboards, and will cruise between 18 to 40 knots, with a max speed around 50 knots. The hull is built with Kevlar fiberglass cloth that’s vacuum bagged with a Corecell foam core.
Owners can choose twin diesel engine packages, ranging from 260 to 370 hp per engine, or opt for twin gas outboard engines ranging from 300 to 450 hp per engine. A joystick option and bow thruster are available.
In the cockpit is U-shaped seating; aft-facing benches in the pilothouse are available. Owners can also opt for a full countertop with a wet bar. The 38FS will be offered with a convertible top, or hardtop with opening windows. An aft cockpit shade is optional.
Other options include two day beds—one in the forward seating area and the other in the cockpit. The forward seating is served by a table that sinks flush to the floor, to become part of a daybed.
Like the original Shelter Island Runabout, this new model features custom-made details, including hand-polished type 316 stainless steel chocks, folding cockpit steps, and a varnished teak anchor platform with windlass. There is an option for a varnished teak cabin trunk which, the company says, offers the “traditional touch of artisanal craftsmanship.”
The 38FS is priced at $869,400 with inboards and $809,400 with outboards.
