A salvage crew ripped apart a half-sunken sailboat Wednesday in Indian River to start another round of removing abandoned boats from Brevard County waterways.

The county has identified 30 “derelict vessels” that pose either a navigation or environmental hazard.

There is $45,700 available, enough to remove 14 boats, according to Matt Culver of the Brevard County Natural Resources Management Office.

“Unfortunately, it can take a year or two from when a vessel is designated derelict or abandoned until we have the funding to remove it,” Culver said.
