Four boaters, one of them a 9-year-old boy, tried removing water from their vessel as it took on rough seas and eventually sank, according to a report released today from Florida Fish and Wildlife on Tuesday morning.
Three of the four boaters drowned, while the fourth is recovering at a Martin County hospital.
Less than an hour after they set out from Sandsprit Park in Stuart, they noticed water filling the rear of their 24-foot Sea Ray, the report said. They tried removing the water with a bilge pump and buckets, but the vessel sank within five minutes.
