For Edward Couvillier, the process of building a boat is a simple one, something he’s done almost his whole life.
There are no blueprints, no drawings, no models and no measurements.
“I can just visualize it when I want to build something,” he says. “That’s it. I can look at it in my mind and tell you how it’s going to look.”
Couvillier, 85, is a master boatbuilder who lives along the Bayou Teche in Louisiana’s rural St. Mary Parish.
He is building what might be his final boat, a skiff made from cypress and marine plywood. Couvillier is building this boat not for himself or a fellow fisherman, but instead for a documentary being made by a University of Louisiana at Lafayette professor.
