A fisherman from Canada’s Prince Edward Island pulled the engine box off his burning boat and used it as a raft while he waited to be rescued early Monday morning.

“He was on the phone the whole time with 911, sitting in his engine box,” said a fellow fisherman who motored to the rescue with firefighters and an auxiliary Coast Guard member. “He flipped his engine box upside down. He was half a mile from his boat, floating in the engine box.”

Besides his cellphone, the fisherman had two life jackets, a flare kit and a plastic shovel, which he used as a paddle.
