Five men, none of them wearing lifejackets, were rescued from the hull of a capsized boat in choppy waters off South Australia’s Kangaroo Island.
Emergency services were activated after reports a boat had capsized about 5 p.m. on Wednesday, with an orange distress flare spotted by a member of the public about a half-mile off Cape Willoughby, at the eastern end of Kangaroo Island.
A short time later an EPIRB — Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon — was also activated in the area.
Police water operations co-ordinated a response with Australian Search and Rescue (AUSSAR), which contacted a RAAF Orion aircraft flying in the area.
The plane’s crew spotted the upturned recreational fishing boat with the five men clinging to the hull of the vessel and relayed their position.
