It’s an issue known to mariners worldwide — floating debris fallen overboard from commercial ships.
Since its still summer in Australia, the issue made local news last week when the Australian Coast Guard issued a navigational warning about shipping containers floating in the ocean off the Portland coastline after four containers washed up on the beach.
Portland Coast Guard flotilla commander Stephen Brown said there could be others submerged in the water.
